  • 3.1 idle prob

i have a 1990 cavi z24 5-speed with a 3.1. all i have done to the engine is cleaner upper and lower intake with no egr , no cat, oil breather,k and N air filter. and the car does not idle right when the car is at running temp and when i push the clutch to shift the rpm's go up to 2 grand. so if anyone has any ideas too help the would be cool. thanks.

have you tried to the idle relearn yet? if not ill give ya the link to it. i would try that first. then i would say iac or tps.

how does it idle? because if its a rough lopey idle, then it could be injectors.

well i did the idle relearn and it helped a little but after driving around when the engine is at norm temp and i push the clutch in the idle flys up to 2 grand and goes done to about a steady 500. but the thing that is getting me is that when i push the clutch in when iam shifting the rpm goes up to 2 grand. but the actual idle seems to be ok for now so thats not bothering me anymore its just when i shift gears. and another thing is when i am say in 4th gear and going about 35-40 mph and give it gas the engine does not want to rev up as quick as it did before.. i gusse i should tell you what i did well the car is a 90 and i just put a ecu from a 91 in the car so i can burn some chips and test it out.

That sure sounds like a vaccum leak to me. If not a line, look for leaks around the TB with carb cleaner.

nope there is no leaks at all. i checked everything and all my lines are new. could it be possible that if the ecu was for a auto that it would do that.

Just so you understand, when I said check around the TB with carb cleaner , i meant spray it around the TB with the engine running to see if it sputters or not. Around where it mounts to the UIM. Good way for checking of the TB to UIM seal to see if it's sucking air. If you got that, cool.
If you're ABSOLUTELY sure you have no vaccum lines leaking or seals, then from what you've said, I would look at your TPS and IAC. GL.
As to your ECM question, was the 5 speed swapped in or factory?

                  5-speed factory.

if the computer was from an auto, then you wouldnt have a speedo. as i have tried it lol. my car done that, and as weird as it may sound. try to bump the idle up with the screw on the throttle body. when mine done it, i bumped the idle up and it quit. i guess the idle was so low, going from an auto to a 5 speed. it would drop durring the shift, and bounce up pretty high so it wouldnt die or something, something to try.. because 500 is a pretty low idle for a 5 speed 3.1, should be at like 950 or so

well the car idles fine but now when the engine is warm and i have been driving for a while the idle jumps up and down like at a stop lite it will go to about 600 RPM and then jump to 1200RPM and go down to 300 and then die. and still when i shift the RPM goes up to 2000 between shifts when the clutch is down then when it is in gear its fine.

And YES i checked all the gasket surfaces and there is no leaks.
