  • 3.1l multi port intake question

Ive seen some pics of 3.1ls and i was wondering how you guys clean up the intake/ valve covers. My intake and throttle body are all oxidized and the vavle covers were painted but dont match the car so i want to try and clean it up a little before i get it in the car.

What do you use to repaint the dark background on the plenum?

Easy, paint it with whatever you want and then use sandpaper on the top to polish it. High temp engine enamel or anything else would work.

The steel wool wont scratch up the surface either. I've used it to clean up gasket surfaces. It is so fine, it gives it a factory appearance again, and not a trace of scratches. On a rough surface like the grooves on the plenum, it will be used up fast though. I think my 8 or 12 pack cost me around $3 at Meijer?

Is it the origional Fiero engine?

Do you have the red valve covers/UIM (Upper Intake Manifold)?

I do and im trying to get rid off most of the stuff of 2.8l motor. Im swapping in the aluminum head 3.1l motor that i want to clean up the intake on because one of the few parts that isnt new.

The steel wool/ brake cleaner pocket-rocket reccomended is working great. Ive been doing it a little at a time and it really cleans it up good. The intake started off being almost a black color and it has a good shine for the most part now.

                  can't wait to see pics.

The intake on my old 2.8 was so oxidized that I had to do something with it. I ended up using a flapper wheel on a drill to smooth it totally out, and then used finer and finer grits of sandpaper until it was totally smooth, and had a mirror finish to it. I then painted it all BLACK and left the raised parts mirror. It looked really good.

Just do it outside, or you will have a little too much fun doing it
