My buddy's 94' Lumina just took the tranny dump. He just picked up a 97' with a "blown" engine (turned out to be a locked oil pump and broken cam). the plan was to use the engine from the older one in the 97', we where going to just swap the intakes but as I'm sure you all know the lower intake is entirely different. Is there any way to swap the wiring from the 97 onto the old one using the intake from the 94? we thought about trying it but wanted to ask so we don't spend days working only to find it wont work. thanks

using an OBD1 engine in an OBD2 car?

Keep in mind that in most states it is ILLEGAL to use an older engine in a newer car.
Putting a 1997 engine (3100 SFI) in a 1994 is LEGAL, but putting a 1994 engine (3.1 MPFI) in a 1997 is NOT.
Not so much that it is ILLEGAL, but it can not be inspected for street use. It would have to be a TRACK CAR and TRAILERED ONLY car.
NOW!!!!!
You CAN use a 3.1 MPFI (1994 engine) BLOCK and swap on the 3100 heads, and intake. If you do that, you might want to upgrade to the newer VIN J 3100 SFI intake setup (large port). That would be the ONLY way to use the 1994 engine in a 1997 car, and it be able to be used for street use.
Check your local laws. That is how it is here in Texas.Taylor

Forgot to add, most of the laws are focused towards EMISSIONS TESTING.
I can use an older 3.1 MPFI in my 1990 STE. My 1990 STE has a 3.1 MPFI, BUT, if I use a 1989 3.1 MPFI, I have to convert it to use the 1990 DIGITAL EGR. That is the only way it can be legal for street use.
Same things apply to newer cars. If I was to replace the 3100 SFI in my 1996 Grand Prix with an older 3100 SFI (1993-1995 3100 SFI) then as long as I convert it to use the newer 1996 LINEAR EGR, then it will be a legal car.
Just a couple of examples for you.Taylor

So is the 94 a 3.1MPFI I take it? I'm not up to speed on what vehicles got the 3100 SFI in 94 and which didn't. Mine has it but does the 94 lumina?
If the 94 has a 3100 SFI then it can be made to work with not much work. If the 94 had the 3.1MFPI then you won't be able to do the swap without a bunch of work, and the 97 won't like not having a cam sensor or a 24x crank sensor to read either cause the 3.1mpfi doesn't have those.
Might want to check www.car-part.com for a 3100 or 3400 close to you for the 97.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

The Luminas got the MPFI in 94 (along with the Cavy's). So Isaac is correct in the fact that the PCM will not like the MPFI engine since it is lacking several key sensors.-Brad-

only car to get the 3100 SFI in 1993 was the Cutlass Supreme (rare option, but they are out there).
All cars got the 3100 SFI starting in 1994 EXCEPT the Lumina. The Lumina didn't get the 3100 until 1995 when it was redesigned as the GEN 1.5 Lumina/Monte Carlo.
As far as I know, the Lumina was the only carry over. I have HEARD that the 1994 3.1 was SFI, but I have not really looked into it. The only 1994 Lumina at the local yard was a Z34.Taylor

As stated above, the Lumina AND the Cavaliers didn't get the 3100. The Cavy's kept the MPFI in 94, and then went all 4-cyl with the body style change in 95.-Brad-

AFAIK, it was just the Cavy and Lumina. I know the L-body and N-body vehicles got it. The J-body didn't. The majority of the W-bodies did. Is there any others? The A-Body (Ciera) got it in 93 (contrary to Taylor's statement above), and it was the beast with the TB w/built-in MAF and PROM'd ECM. I think that covers everything...-Brad-
