  • OBD1 1995 Grand Am 3100 M..SES Diagnostic mode

    engine soon light to function.

The light works fine but diagnostic mode can't be tapped.I just want to see if there are any codes and I can't seem to make it work.I grounded the proper terminals with a paper clip and nothing. The battery is fully charged and the ECM works perfectly..whats the deal with the ALDL junction under the dash?..why can't I jump it to get the system to at least function in diagnostic mode?.Does anyone know of another way to tap into the diagnostic mode bypassing the ALDL connector under the dash?.

You can't read it like OBDI with paper clips. 94/95 is "OBD1.5". You must use a scan tool.

Correct. The "paperclip" method was removed as an option with the new "flash" type PCMs. So, basically anything after 94 doesn't have this option.

If you get a ALDL cable and have a laptop, get TunerPro RT and download the 3.1 94-95 W body definition dataloging .adf file from the website. Should let you scan any obd1.5 FWD 3100 application.

Check your fuses too. I tried to do the paper clip to my 1996 Grand Prix about 8 years ago (before I knew better) and it blew a fuse. I just put a new fuse in and it was fine.

Fuse or not, 94-95 flash PCM's will not do the paper clip trick. But if I blew a fuse when I tried it on mine, the car doesn't care and keeps on going! lol

It shouldn't blow anything on these though since one is ground and one is serial data stream, and shorting it won't fry anything from what I can tell how it works.

I think that when I did it (been a LONG time ago), when it didn't work, I just started connecting wires at random. Not sure what I did to blow the fuse, but I heard it pop.

My car only has 2 wires in the ALDL. Your 96 I believe has several, along with 12v +. So I can see that happening.
