  • LIM just replaced today on 98 Century, still weird

I just had the LIM replaced today at a local shop (1998 Buick Century, 89,000 miles). They also replaced the plugs and put on new Belden Premium ignition wires. They then did an oil change. Drove the car home, seemed fine. Went outside after 10 minutes, started it up, and it was around 75% of the temperature gauge instead of the 50% it normally sits at, and it was misfiring until I gave it gas. Temp then went down within 30-45 seconds.

Drove back to the shop, but halfway stopped at a convenience store. Turned off the car, turned the ignition to accessory and watch it inch up to 80-85%. Started car up and the temperature did work it's way down to normal within 30-45 seconds. Stopped at the mechanics and he said he didn't think the coolant needed to be flushed (Looks dark in the overflow though), as the temperature stays fine while driving. Said that the thermostat tested fine for them, and the misfiring was from the engine learning idle. He walked back inside as he was closing up, and the engine stalled.

Drove on the highway 20 miles. Stopped at a grocery store, went inside for 20 minutes. Came out, and car was around 85% on the temperature guage, but did drop down with 30-45 seconds of driving. Did some more errands and car never misfired or stalled again, but the heat soak while off seems strange as this didn't happen before. Never had any problems till 2 weeks ago when I found about the LIM at the same time that my car went apeshit while driving. Misfirings, abs going off instantly when pressing down on the brake, radio going haywire. Was all fine when I replaced the ancient battery (Everyone at the parts shop seemed to think that the battery was original from 199, but did notice a small coolant leak when I checked the LIM so that's why I had it repaired today, and he did use the MS980004t Felpro's.

Sorry if that makes no sense, just tried to give as much information as possible. I've been reading this forum for the last two weeks learning all about the LIM problem and the do's/don'ts on repair. If anyone has any insight I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Get a radiator flush somewhere. That dexcool is clogging up your system. After the flush you may have to drive it awhile and get another one, or even replace the heater core if it's clogged.

A new thermostat is a good idea too. Sounds like a clog or sticking thermostat or both. Your missfire sounds like some other issue, what plugs did he put in? If they were bosch then they may be out of heat range. Check the article section for sparkplug info.

      Autolite platinum's.

So you're saying a sticking thermostat or bad fluid could cause the engine to heat up afterwards, but be fine while driving? It's staying cool where before it would start to creep up when I turned on the AC. I'm not questioning anyone as I feel like I have no clue at all, just am trying to understand the reasoning behind everything. Thanks.

It all together came to less than I had planned on. With the Felpro MS98004T, the belden premium wires, the new plugs, and apparently a distributor shaft seal and gasket also from fel-pro, and an oil change, came to $855.65 after tax. Had been quoted more at other places just for the LIM job. And he said when I stopped in that he could get a new thermostat in there for me, so probably wouldn't charge me much.

Pull those plugs out and get some ac delco plugs. Not many people claim to get good results from platinum plugs. Any mechanic that knows these motors well will know this. Engine will not misfire from relearning idle as far as I have seen. Maybe a modded motor but it doesn't sound like that is your issue.

Def get the coolant flushed 100%. You cannot mix dexcool and the green stuff or it will be real bad. Dexcool is horrible stuff. Hopefully you can get it all cleaned out. Use the old school green stuff that works. The new stuff isn't very good either from what I have been hearing.

Engine has run fine ever since. After finding a little muddy stuff when I scraped the inside of the radiator got it flushed, and after a week still seems clean inside.

Only problem is that every once in awhile, while on cruise-control down the highway it'll suddenly start rising in temperature and gets pretty high till I stop and let it sit for a minute, or sometimes just turning the heater on/off gets it to start going back down. Has happened 3 times now. I drive 100 miles round-trip everyday for work, so it gets alot of miles. Hasn't lost a bit of coolant, so at this point figuring it's the thermostat. Will report back once I do that, as I think I'm going to do it myself.

And with the plugs/wires, I've averaged 31.4MPG with 87octane Mobil through 3 fill-ups.. I was only averaging 26-27MPG recently before the swap.

Update: I'm a moron. It got warmer again and I kept having issues where it'd run fine for 30-40 miles, then once I'd slow down to enter a city it'd move up a tick mark past straight-up. Then once I'd park and turn off, it'd work it's way up to barely below red line.

The mechanic who did the LIM gasket replacement kept saying it was normal and I just never noticed it before, but he could 'swap the thermostat for $100' if it would make be feel better. Took it to the chevrolet dealership that I purchased the vehicle at 3 years ago, as they are pretty reputable around here, and within 10 minutes they were like, "Your drive belt is on wrong around the water pump, it's been running backwards." They did wind up doing compression test, etc, but that's all that was wrong (TieRod/Control arm different story). Cost me $80 for diagnostics, but they did go through everything and to keep the temp down and peace of mind it was worth it. Figured I'd post my stupidity, as I'm sure it's not the first time this has happened.

OMG!!!! seriously??? How in the hell did he put it on like that? I would think the tensioner would be really weird with the belt miss routed!

Well good that you got it running well again!
