I mean is it the same casting ? I have a 1995 3.4 and a 2001 3400, do you guys know if they are EXACTLY the same castings ?? You guys think the cranks will swap ??
Thanks !!....
They are not the same castings, where the block or heads are concerned. The '95 block will be a RWD block with many differences to a FWD block, along with completely different head castings. They are also two very different generations of 60 degree V6, the '95 being a gen 1 and the 3400 being a gen 3.
I'm not including the DOHC block in this discussion because that should be obvious that it is a different casting.
The cranks will swap however, since they are the same cast part. In fact 3.1 (FWD), 3100, 3.4 and 3400 all share the same crank. Some RWD 3.1s have been known to come with the same crank, but sometimes do not have the timing notches machined into them.
Thank you Raven, I have a 92 3.1 RWD, a 95 3.4 RWD, and a 2001 3400 FWD, I am using the 95 Camaro motor with a FWD timing cover for my build. But the 95' Camaro 3.4 seems to be a bit unhappy with the threads on the balancer bolt in the crank. Of course they are all three the same size, I don't have the correct tap to chase it. I cleaned it up, lubed it up and slowly ran a bolt all the way in. I hope it will be ok, it's not happy for sure, fingers crossed on that one. Thanks again Raven... Let me know if you need any of this stuff
