  • 2.8 LH7 Engine Identification?

    Hey all,

I'm wondering how one can Identify an LH7 engine as compared to the LE2, externally. I have a 1984 Pontiac 6000 STE (came with the LH7 motor, Z code), the base model or LE would have the LE2 motor (X code). I bought this car from my close friend, who told me the person from whom he bought it was convinced by the dealer to replace the engine at 100,000 miles, although we have no documentation for this.

I know by research on this website that the LH7 had larger valves, so perhaps there is a number on the heads to reveal this information? I am about to replace the valve cover gaskets so I would be able to see the heads if this is true. If not, maybe something on the block itself, or some other part?

    Thanks in advance!

No external way to tell in that years as far as I know. The head castings were the same. Big valve heads were just machined with larger valves. All I can suggest is to check if the engine has a full VIN number on it.
