  • Can you help me identify this block?

Bought this block with the carb set-up from a 2.8. Guy that sold it to me bought it rebuilt from an engine rebuilder that was going out of business. He said he bought it believing it to be a 3.1 from a Camaro.

Here are the only numbers I could find cast into the block:

Toward the front on the drivers side: 0240934
    Directly below those numbers: GM
Toward the rear on the drivers side: 934
Toward the rear on the passenger side: 934R
Back of the block above where the bell housing attaches: A034

    I apologize for a not-very-good photo.

The timing chain cover and water pump are not good clues because he pulled them off his 2.8 and stuck them on this one.

Can anyone help me identify this block? I've looked online and haven't found these casthing numbers on any of the websites I've looked at.

The 4 bolt engine mount on the passenger side (or back side in this case) of the block gives it away. RWD blocks use a 3 bolt mounting pattern.

Can the codes identify whether it is a 3.1 or 3.4? I really don't want to have to pull the heads to check.

            Thanks

              It'll be a 3.1L, as there was not a 3.4L (except the DOHC) FWD until the 3400. And that's not a 3400.

It should also have the size stamped on the front under the timing cover, correct?

Yup its a 3.1L/2.8L block because the oil pan is steel and like brad said the 3400 (which has an aluminum pan) was the first 3.4L FWD motor. The only way to know for sure its to look at the crank or measure the stroke by removing the heads.

Removing the pan would be easier

The earlier oil pan, timing cover, and water pump were added to the FWD block. I'll pull the pan and post a picture of the crank, and I'll pull the timing cover and see if the block is stamped.

Pulling the pan alone will help determine if it's a gen 2 or gen3 if the mains have been undisturbed. If it's a gen3 the mains will have cross bolt bosses in them that are used to bolt the gen3 oil pan to the mains as a cross bolt structure.

There's a huge letter cast on the side of the block, what letter does it have?

I wouldn't say they are huge (maybe a half inch tall), but the left side says 934L with a 3 below it. The right side say 934R.

If there should be a huge letter somewhere else, could you be more specific where I should look? There's nothing bolted on the block right now, and I don't see anything else that looks like a letter.

the huge letter is only on the gen3's IIRC.

                            Gen 2 3.1/2.8 block:
