  • Small journal identification?

I just picked up a 2.8 off craigslist - is there any way I can tell if it's small journal without actually tearing it down and measuring?

Do you know the year of the engine? Motors made after midyear 1985 all have the larger journals. If you remove the oil pan look at the crank casting#
#504 is a small journal crank
#209,#817,#481, and #526 are all large journal cranks
Not sure on some of the other crank casting numbers if they are large or small.
If the crank is a internally balanced crank( has a disk in the middle of the crank for a distributor less ignition system it will be a large journal crank)

I'll have to pop off the oil pan and take a look. I found it on craigslist in the next town over. $80 for complete motor and uncut wiring harness from a camaro - how could I say no?

      Thanks again, Dave!

You can't!!!! just the brackets, mounts, and misc on the motor will be worth that and more to you. Plus it is a RWD setup that you are going to run anyhow.
