sending unit location

As stated in the title, looking for the location of the water temp sending unit, on a 1986 jeep Cherokee with the 2.8. I'm putting in a mechanical temp gage and there seems to be two sending units. One next to the thermostat housing and one on the front of the head driver side. any help would be appreciated. Thanks

if it's anything like the later setups, then there will be a 2-wire sensor for the ECM and a 1-wire sender for the guages. just tap into the 1-wire for your aftermarket guage.
