  • Removing a UIM

I went to the yard today to pick up the next component for my build, a large port 3100 manifold. I got most of the stuff off and out of the way so I could pull it off but I eventually ran out of time.

There appear to be only two things in the way at this point, one is a little module in front or the coil pack, the other is the EGR.

    I have two questions:

    1) That module looks like it needs to be removed given that one of the manifold bolts is actually attached to it. I couldn't seem to get a wrench at it, what would be the easiest way of removing that?

    2) Is there a trick to getting the EGR off? I can get at the one bolt fine, however since its mounted vertically versus the horizontal mounting on the small port there is a metal coolant line in the way of getting the bolt out.

I don't see why I can't get the manifold off, but I wanted to know if you guys have any tricks to getting those off easier.

The 1st module is the MAP sensor. It can be removed from the bracket by removing two torx screws (T-15?) that face the firewall. Maybe that'll give you the clearance to get that UIM bolt.

Small nut driver to get the MAP bracket off, then you can get to the manifold bolt. No idea about the EGR other than get the coolant line out of the way..

you say you're grabbing a large-port, but that UIM looks like a small-port to me...

i thought about doing that a couple of times and got about halfway through and said screw it and threw some paint on.

my last one which is on the car now. i just shaved the letters and smoothed it out. paint job came out pretty good for spray paint and the fact that i didnt have to same in between coats.

I have had mine off about 6 times.

Painted it, hated it, sanded it, painted it, hated it, had it ported, sand blasted, painted and shaved, hated it, stripped it, counter-sunk the bolt holes, painted it again and still hate it!

Powder coat coming up. I'll probably hate that too!

But mine is about a 10 minute job to remove.

Def need to clean it, I really want to paint it white but I'm pretty sure that is a horrible idea. So I just need to decide on a colour, I may do black, paint the reservoirs white and add some red accents.

That's the second step in my quest for power, only cost $20 bucks too and now I know how to remove an upper intake manifold.

Next step will be to finally lug the shortblock up here and get it all check to make sure it is in spec.

i think my small-port looks alright in flat-black...

                              but white wouldn't look bad.

but the gloss/flat question is what you should be asking...
