  • Alternator Compatability: OBD II Engine/OBD I ECM

Starting to collect more parts for my engine swap.
    Short story, in my 91 Grand Prix I am replacing a 3.4 DOHC (LQ1) with a 3500 (LX9).

I imagine the LQ1 alternator cannot bolt up due to differences in mounting - unfortunate because it is only a few months old.

I plan on finding a used alternator and need to know what will work. My concern is that the electrical connector may be a different shape on my 91s wire harness vs what the 3x00 alternator is meant to accept. Is this true? If a 3x00 alternator cannot work because the connector is different can I use a 3.1 alternator?

Basically, I am looking for an alternator that will bolt to my 3500 and accept the electrical connector on my 91 harness. If the electrical connectors are the same then this isnt a problem. If they are different then I may have some hunting to do if only certain year alternators can work.

Is the LQ1 alt the same as a 3100 1994-96? if so yeah it works just fine... If anything you'd need a 3100 alt bracket...

I have no idea if the LQ1 (1991 version) is the same connector as a 3100 94-96.

Does the 3500 use a different alternator bracket than other 3x00s? I assumed they would all be the same. Pending the electrical connector I was going to pick up a used 3x00 alt.

Hint, Autozone/Oreilly's/Advance parts stores online is a great resource for matching up P/N's and photo's for comparing this stuff.

In 2000+ or somewhere in the later years they went to a new style alt, Cooling fins inside, regulator and rectifier outside. Not sure if the connector changed but the bracket that bolts to the timing cover changed IIRC.

How many wire is your current alt?
