Hello everyone,
I am new to the site and this is my first post. I have a 2001 malibu with the 3100 V6. Many of you probably know that these cars have the small case CS130d alternator rated at a puny 105 amps. I need alot more juice to run my sound system than the factory alt can provide and I don't want to just buy an upgraded CS130D because I need strong output at idle and want to upgrade it later beyond what would be possible with a small case alt like the cs130d.
What I want to do is convert the car to either a CS144 or if possible the AD244 alternator. There were heavy duty versions of these alternators I can pick up in the junk yards cheap. I know that the older generations of the 60degree v6's had the CS144 on them from the factory and I was wondering if I use an alternator bracket from an older engine to convert mine. It looks like the belt routing is different on the older generation engines. Are all of the other pulleys in the same location? Could i just by the proper belt for the old style engines and use the old style bracket to do the conversion?
Has anyone done anything like this? I couldn't find any good pictures of the engine out of a vehicle to compare to. I know there are some knowlegable people here and any help/suggestions are appreciated.
