i just got a parts car (olds cutlass) for the motor and tranny (3100- 4speed) and when u put it in reverse it does fine but when you put it in drive if you mash on it it goes to nuetril i was wondering if a filter and fluid change would fix this or should i get anouther tranny

how many miles? it's not exactly the same but i had a sebring in at work a couple weeks ago, when ti was cold, it wouldn't move at ALL in drive, only reverse. had 150k miles. we did a filter and pan gasket, and a tranny flush(using a machine), and a can of friction additive for tranny's, and it worked like a charm after that.
i should say, the fluid in it wasn't black, it was red, just a bit dark, like a blood red, not the bright cherry red it should have been. if your fluid is brown or black, i'd say it's completely toasted. if it's still red then you might be able to save it..... just don't try to put it in any performance application.

it has just crested 100k the fluid is still red but like a blood red like yours i think its never been changed a little old lady had it and junked it the second it started doing all this the reason im so sceptical about using this tranny is how much of a pain in the a$$ it is to pull it and i dont plan on using it in a racing situation im just planing on using it as a daly driver but i have a buddy that has a 91 z24 with the older 3.1 and he wants to race when i get my 94 gt grand am done so would it be ok to do all that and it be a daily driver and once in a while race it once in a while but like not full ba//s to the wall race it

the tranny in my cavalier done this exact same thing, i didnt have a way to get it to the machine, and i needed it going, so i droped the pan, put a new filter in it, cleaned what i could with some starting fluid, new gasket ect, put new fluid in with a bottle of lucas tranny dope (lucas slip fix or something) and it was like new again. grand am was slipping between 1st and 2nd and i done a fluid and filter change with some of that tranny dope, and its like new again, has over 5 thousand miles on it now and it still doin great!sigpic

That Lucas stuff messed up the TCC solenoid in my 91 when I used it. Made lockup start slipping most of the time - if it did go into lockup that is. I won't do fix-in-a-bottle anymore unless I'm going to trade something in.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.
