  • cylinder head swapping?

hi all, first off i'd like to say hi, i'm brand new here. just scanning some of the other threads on this forum i see a lot of very friendly and knowledgeable enthusiasts, and that is great.

i basically have a head compatibility question.. i'll admit i'm no expert on gm engines, and i;m here trying to solve some problems on a friends car, but any info you guys could provide me to help steer me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

my friend has a 91 isuzu rodeo with a longitudinally mounted 3.1L throttle-body injected LG6. it began losing compression badly some time ago before i knew him, and recently we decided to fiddle with it and see what we could do to get it running, as the little 4wd truck would make an excellent snowboarding vehicle (we live in canada haha).

doing a leakdown test saw the compressed air leaking out the exhaust valve of the rear cylinder on the driver's side, and upon pulling the head off, we found a huge hole in the exhaust valve. pretty clear-cut problem haha.

anyways, he took both heads in to a machine shop to get em polished up and a new valve thrown in, but the fellow at the shop says it's not worth it to fix these heads up. there seems to be a slight crack between the exhaust and intake valve seats on the head that had the bum valve in it, and the vave seats are very worn on the other head as well. up here in edmonton, a new set of heads and gaskets etc will run close to $900, and that's just a little to much for my friend to be spending on an old beater that we're basically just gonna be using for day trips once in a while.

from what i understand the LG6 motor was primarily used in the chev lumina van, olds silhouette and pontiac trans-sport. i think our next plan of action is to check some wreckers for some replacement cylinder heads from some of these vans, seeing as an isuzu rodeo would probably be much harder to find.

my question is, would anyone happen to know if any of the other pushrod 60-degree engines have similar enough cylinder heads that we could use them on the LG6? having a few cars to check for as well as those vans would increase our chances a ton, and even if some modification is required to make it work it would be a lot better than scrapping the rodeo or paying 900 bucks to get her running.

i'm sorry for the long read, and if anyone has any ideas i would gladly hear them, thanks a million in advance for anyone who actually had the patience to get through all that jabber haha

Any 2.8L engine from any vehicle from like 85ish on would have the iron heads you are looking for, as well as any 3.1L with iron heads. The 3.4L engines in the F-bodies (Camaro, Firebird) also share the exact same heads. So if you find a 60V6 engine and it has iron heads, chances are they will be an exact replacement. About the only ones that won't be are the very early years (hence why I said 85ish before), as they have smaller valves. But technically, they will still work.

Unfortunately, none of the aluminum heads will work, unless you want to try to change out the whole top end of the engine. But it sounds like you just want to do as little as possible to make it run again.

    Oh yeah, and welcome!!
