I can tell you the 2.8 top end weighs almost 40lbs more than the 3500 top end. I posted it a while back.

The 3500 dressed with everything except alt, A/C and P/S weighs just under 300lbs (it weighed 320iirc, with the pallete I shipped it on).

I'm going to weigh this 3500 shortblock I have in the next few days and will be able to give you a more accurate number.

I'm confident they're going to come out to about the same, although there is about a 30lb total difference between the cast iron and aluminum heads, the steel crank with larger crank pins adds about half or more of that back, I weighed them but don't recall the exact wts. To maintain proper cylinder wall thickness in the 3.5 it required more metal for the increased cylinder bore, the rods are a little longer in addition to the larger diameter big end which also adds a little more weight. Oh yeah, at least 3 of the main caps on the 3.5 are heavier and I'm pretty sure the aluminum pan is heavier than the stamped steel pan.

The starter for the 3500 is a big savings to the tune of as much as about 10 lbs by feel.

Joeseph, you are probably right. You also have to add a few pounds for the roller timing equipment.

I weighed an iron top end, it was 81lbs. I also weighed a 3400 top end and it was 45.

Now all you have to do is deduct the weight of the cast iron exhaust manifolds since they vary so much in design to get down to the core of the weight differences. On the Fiero forum I found a weight of 348 lbs for the 2.8L but no description of what it did or did not have on it, and on one of the links in the thread I found 350 lbs for the 2.8/3.1 not sure if it's the iron head motor or not but I suspect it is.

So we are talking about a weight savings and considerable power increase over the 2.8L

i have the truleo headers modified to fit the 3500......

the weight sounds like its going to be very close to the 2.8. no matter, this has a shot ton more power stock vs stock.

What does the 3400 on the scale say, 340? My 3400 weighed 325 with no manifolds or accessories. I don't see how a 3500 is under 300 unless the block casting is significantly lighter.

Reread post #7. The scale doesn't lie

340 on the nose for a 3500. I was trying to remember the actual weight of the 3500 I sold and shipped several months ago, but since I was charged for 320lbs, I was guessin that was correct. Perhaps the freight scales were worn in my favor?
