  • Spal PWM Fan Control?

Ok, so I have this wired in, works great except for when I remove my battery and the temp settings reset.

I'm getting the sensor to go with it, but where would be a good place to mount it (while keeping the stock CTS)? I'm thinking thermostat housing, but I don't believe that would work too well due to fluctuating temps when the thermostat opens/closes...

Any water passages near the OEM CTS that would be accessible for another sensor?

You could tap the rear head like the older 3100's had. Or there is a water plug in the back of the block that fits a single wire temp sender I've heard.

how about running a tee off the stock sensor location? From what I gather I need to pull the head to drill out for the sensor

I'd personally want the sensor in the coolant flow path. Teeing off might get stagnet coolant. Check the back of the block for that one hole. I'm not sure the size of it but the single wire 1994-1995 sensor is what I was talking about that fits it.

fair enough... after looking into it a bit more, the 3 wire CTS, what type of output is the green wire, variable voltage or resistance (need to rewire my gauge as well)?

I'm just gonna tap the thermostat neck for the fan control... doesn't have to be dead on accurate, just fairly close. 2k1 engine doesn't have the provision for the second sensor on the head.

PAC-2000 uses flash ram and never looses settings just a thought hehe, and can also be custom programmed to most factory half sweep gauges and senders. All I need to know is what the room temp resistance is to know if it is compatible out of box, mods have been done for 14k solid state 180 degree angle sweep.

The 3 wire CTS is a solid state transducer. Power, ground, and signal, also more commonly called senders instead of sensors because 3-wire senders send out a voltage sweep and don't require a reference voltage or pull-up carrier voltage.

None of my gauges are factory anymore though

I'll see if the Spal sender is resistance based (should be) and get a reading in the next couple days. I got a busy weekend coming up.

Yes, but cam was on "night mode" so they are brighter in the pic than they actually are.

even though not dak dig I still dig digital. They look nice.

resistance at room temp and at normal run temp is all I need. Also the PAC is not PWM however the spal fan is 2 speed> (rpm increases through pwm on first speed, then high is high).

Got busy w/ other things and forgot about this thread... anyhow after some research, the DD unit, as nice as it is, will not suit my application requirement because of this reason:

Mounting is recommended inside the cab of the vehicle or alternate dry environment.
I've run out of places to mount any more electronics without doing a full stripdown of my dash, which is a 2 day endeavor.

Also, I'm pretty much burnt out working on this car... I got into too many projects on it at once, so I just want to get it running so I can more than likely put it up for sale. With that, I don't want to half-arse the rest of it...

I know where one coolant passage is on the starter side of the motor (02 3400), already have a sender there for the gauge, but its not 100% accurate. There's not enough meat in the t-stat housing to tap for the SPAL sender... is there somewhere else to put the sender w/out disassembling half the engine?

Should be a coolant plug in the rear of the block. Or tap the heads like the early 3100.
