  • 2.8/3.1 air pump?

when i was at the wreckers last weekend pulling my tranny for my swap I noticed the 2.8 in the car had an extra pump of somekind on the rear of the motor. it wasnt alt, p/s, a/c or water pump. it was just below the alternator on the back of the block.

The car has AQ9's (pnematic(sp?) seats) in it like mine has, i was wondering if this was some kind of air pump for the seats or something. I havent looked yet to see if my car has it as well.
    thanks.

nope. The seats airpump is located under the drivers seat.

That was probably the A.I.R. pump for the EMISSIONS stuff. At least, that is what it was if it was a MANUAL TRANNY car.

ah ok, yeah my car dosent have this pump and the car i saw the pump on was a 5 speed.

So whats the purpose of this pump, what does it do for emmisions and why only on 5 speed cars.

not 100% sure. I used to have a 5-speed cutlass supreme, but the air pump was out on it. I THINK that what it does is when the car is cold, it pumps fresh air into the exhaust to make it not be so rich coming out of the tailpipe. I am probably wrong, or there is more too it than that, but that is what I have been told.

Yup that what it does. Helps the cat light up too. It only pumps air into the exhaust while the car is in open loop.

someone should hook that up so it pumps into the intake like a mini supercharger, lmao

so its not important really? not worth the hassle to swap in when i do my 5 speed swap?

Back when I had a 5-speed Cutlass Supreme, the AIR pump fried, and the dealer just said that when the car was cold, it would run a little rich. Once it warmed up, it was fine.

K thanks, so no worries. I plan to run turbo anyways wouldnt that have a similar effect, i dont know how true it is but i keep hearing a turbo is good for emmissions.
