  • how hard wud it be to swap a 2.8 in place of a 3.1

sorry for the crappy grammar but it was the only way i could fit the 3.1 in the title. i recently got a 92 firebird with a 3.1l in it that is totally shot and i was wondering what all would i need and how hard it would be to swap a 2.8 out of an early 90's s10 in its place?

an s10 would bolt right in. you would need to change the intake manifolds (lower, middle and upper) aswell as the fuel rail and injectors due to the fact that an s10 is tbi and your camaro is mpfi. you may also need to swap accessories and brackets, aswell as the oil pan (not sure if the sump is different on the pan)

Yea the pan swap is advisable but not necessary since the S-10 had more clearance.

what about the ecu? would i have to use the 2.8 ecu or would the 3.1 ecu be sufficient?

Since the 2.8 was throttle body and the 3.1 is mpfi or sfi, and you need to swap the intakes, I'd say you'd need to run the 3.1 ecu.
Tuning a car is full of compromises. You must decide if you are willing to give up either reliability, performance, or a whole load of cash. Also remember that repairs will seem to come up much more often as you strive for even more performance
