  • Does A/C need oil with every recharge?

I have a 92 Grand Prix that looks like it was converted to 134a. When I bought the car last year the A/C supposedly worked but the car had been sitting for about a year and it needed to be charged. I figured I'd charge it and see how long it held. When I bought the freon, I notice they also sold oils that you put in through the freon hose, but I didn't bother to look into it since it was the end of the summer and I didn't think the freon would hold anyway. Well it's a year later and the air is still ice cold, so my question is, do I need to add that oil, and if so, what kind of oil for an r12 system converted to 134a? Thanks for reading everyone.

It should be fine, unless the compressor is noisy.

I haven't noticed any noise but I haven't actually checked for it either. I'll have to listen for it tomorrow morning. Thanxs again!

        oil

Oil doesn't need to be added generally unless the system has been converted and/or flushed. Assuming that some R134A compatible oil was added when that system was converted, there's no reason to add oil now.

You can also get R134a with oil in the mix. So when you charge the system, it will add oil as well.
