  • Rod caps

Is there a trick to getting the rod bearing caps off? Just want to take a couple off to check my bearings while the oil pan is out and can't seem to get the cap off.

I usually use the wood end of a ball pein hammer and tap the side of the cap, to dislodge it.

    Dead blow hammer is recommended.

Thanx, I just got the first one. I threaded the nut halfway on and tapped it slightly and it poped off. How do these look for 90k mile bearings? Looks like I'm going to replace them all while I have the pan off, they're cheap enough and I will be replacing the engine before too long anyways (the rod journal looks the same).

That one has definatly spun, looks like both upper and lower bearing spun at the same time, which is a rarety, but nicer to happen that way than to have only one have spin.

It's virtually impossible to measure without taking the rod out of the engine, but see if you can measure the rod and cap to make sure it's still in round and not oversized, from the bearing spinning.

It knocked, and I shut it down immediately. Refilled with oil, the knock went away so I thought I was cool.

The weird thing is the bearing landed back where it was supposed to be when I took the cap off.

Or 180* out from where it should be. That might be the upper rod bearing.

Yeah, that rod is junk. At a bare minimum, you'll have to take it out and get it re-sized at a machine shop before you can even think about putting a bearing in it. By the look of that bearing, though... the rest of the engine is probably toast... especially considering that you say the crank looks just like that bearing.
