  • 91 sunbird - rough running

    HI everyone.

Maybe someone can guide me in the right direction here. so last night my car decided to give me some problems. When you start driving and it gets to operational temp, it starts idle bad and when you give it gas it smells like it is flooding. When it does this the engine light is on steady and it gives the following codes. 15, 23, 43, 44, 53, 66. the only code it would have had before this was the 44. When trying to start it after this happens you need to give it gas for it to stay running. if you wait about 10 min it will fire up with no problems.

the car is a sunbird with a 3.1 in it.

You may want to check your Fuel Pressure Regulator. Pull the vacuum hose going to the regulator. If the hose has gas in it, the regulator is leaking internally. The regulator is mounted between the two fuel rails under the upper intake manifold at the end near the throttle body.

Thanks for the reply cncguy. So i got around to checking the Fuel Pressure Regulator doesn't look like it is leaking into the line. There was a broken vacume line that goes to the purge tank and to the intake. even with that fixed samething. i did notice that sound it makes when i unplugged the line from the fuel regulator is kinda what it sounds like when it is acting up. It also likes to idle at 3 grand sometimes, mostly when you first start it.

After i fixed that vacume line i went for a ride and it seamed to be running ok, i drove it for about 45 minutes and no problems, the next day drove for 5 min and then it wouldn't start keeped flooding. does anyone have any idea's as to what could do this. i did replace the coil pack along with the icm, about a year ago cause it was shorted out and keeped blowing my ecm fuse.

one other thing that way be important, when it will not start after it stalls it pours out black smoke well turning it over. It tries to start but nothing, unless i give it some gas. then it will stay running if i keep the rpm's at 2 grand and it still burns pretty dark
