  • 3.4L crate engine for 84 S-10

Put a 3.4L crate engine in my 84 S-10. Works OK. I put a tunnel ram and Holley 490-4bbl. Problem, starter went out. Where can I get/do they make a high performance starter for the 3.4? Thanks guys.

I didn't do the swap from 2.8 to 3.4. Did the crate motor come with a starter or did the guy use the 2.8 starter and are they the same stock starters? How much does a stock starter cost? Thanks guys.

No the crate does not come with a starter. But any starter from an S-10 (with a 2.8L) will work for you.

There has been discussion on installing SBC starters but I do not know what the final conclusion was on that topic.

The problem with a SBC starter is that you'd need one with the inline bolt pattern, which is far less common...

I think 99.995% that the new style FWD starter will fit my Pontiac V8 (just haven't tried it out yet)

I'm investigating a custom gear-reduced starter for the 3.4l. Check out http://www.cardomain.com/id/evilmiata for details of the project. My research indicates that all rwd 60º motors (Jeep, S-10, F-body) use the same starter. These starters are not compatible with FWD 60º motors nor V8s. However, it may be possible to disassemble a 60º starter housing and reinstall a V8 motor/drive-reduction. If you gather any extra info, please keep me posted.

I am told this PWM-9000 starter will work on ALL Chevy V8 & V6s. Click on applications to see. http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...d=11&x=11&y=10

Um no my starter has an offset bolt pattern. All RWD 60*'s do. That is why it may be possible to make a SBC starter work. Mine also has equal length bolts. Whick the FWD motors do not use.

How about asking a commercial salvage yard to do an interchange check?

Oh, wow, i didn't know that... The only 2.8 RWD i had never needed a starter replacement. I thought they would've been the same as the FWD, just the other direction...

The SBC starters are available in straight and offset bolt pattern aswell....

If anyone is in my area and they want to try it out, I won't have any issues with taking it back if it doesn't work. (i sell auto parts!)
