It should be a getrag. All V6 5-spd FWD cars were the getrags.

Well built by Getrag under different companies.

      Getrag-284

I swear I had an Isuzu in my 92 beratta not sure anymore forgot...and I lost my J-body manual

If it is a getrag the placard main is on the rear of the tranny pointing towards the firewall within proximity of the dip stick and the secondary is on the bottom viewable from under the car.

Actually, designed by Getrag, built by GM at their Muncie, IN plant. There is another thread describing the different versions.

Gm Re-designed Getrags base German model from the ground up for use in the American FWD cars in many versions, Getrag still built them more or less from the design that Gm made up. GM did not have patent rights to build, they had rights to redesign, but not to call patents on the redesigned getrag.

I always thought that in the day.....Getrag built then and then sent them to the GM factory.

So what's with the version known as a "New Venture" NVG-T550? Why isn't it called a "Getrag"?

Just theroy, but ('N'ew 'V'enture)=NV+ ('G'etrag)=G NVG New Venture Getrag T550.

The word 'New Venture' is used several times in websites dealing with stuff about getrags, Getrag Gears of North Amarica, or Getrag 284.

Getrag never built the GM transmissions. They simply designed the gearset. GM picked up the original Getrag european design and worked with Getrag to redesign the transmission case to bolt up to GM FWD engines. They were always built in GM's Muncie, IN plant.

NVG = New Venture Gear, a powertrain joint venture between GM and DaimlerChrysler Corp. formed in 1990. When this JV was formed, GM's Muncie, IN plant, and all of the transmissions, differentials, gears and other automotive components made there became NVG products. NVG, which included the Muncie plant, as well as DCC's Syracuse, NY facility, produced drivetrain components for GM and DaimlerChrysler Corp. vehicles.

In February, 2002, GM dropped out of the JV. GM relinquished its stake in NVG but retained its plant in Muncie, IN, as an independent business. DCC, which had a 64% stake in the venture, assumed complete ownership of NVG, which continues to supply drivetrain components to GM.

It is similar to how Borg Warner used to manufactre the T56 6-speed transmissions in the F-bodies, Corvettes, and Vipers. Tremec bought the transmission business from Borg Waner, so they are now known as Tremec T56's. Exact same transmission, same design, built in the same plant, just new name.

Aren't the 284s put together by getrag (they did have getrag tags affixed to them)

Also the new transmissions (F23/F25) are built by getrag ( http://www.getrag.de/ ), and have "getrag" right in the casting...

Oh, and the isuzu trans doesn't have the steel side-cover like the getrag does (if i remember that one right)
