  • 1995 4T60E bang shift 1-2

Hey everyone, first post! Nice forums, need to spend more time here.

Let me give you a bit of history first.

I bought a 1995 Cutlass Supreme convertible with 118k miles a couple years ago. It is currently at 149k miles.

I noticed that the tranny had already been rebuilt as the case had been painted baby blue. I don't know what the mileage at rebuild time was.

Transmission shifted "ok" at first. The more the miles have piled on, the rougher the 1-2 shift has become. EVERY other aspect is VERY good!

It seems to be less of a problem when its cold out, compared to when its hot.

I tried swapping out the modulator (no fluid was found in the line) for a brand new GM piece and it made no difference.

I had two transmission shops drive it. Unfortunately it was a cold day (35-40F) and both guys thought the tranny was fine, no work should be done. Both commented on a SLIGHT varnish smell on the fluid. But color was good.

Since I have owned this tranny for the past 30k miles, I know the shift quality isn't what it should be. I really can't say I sense any hesitation before the shift. It's not like the shift comes late, or the tranny is slipping and then catches... its just rough.

There have been 3 cars with 4T60Es in my family... and another 2 "close GM relatives"... so I KNOW what's normal.

Frankly at 148k miles I don't know how much longer I want to keep this car. So I doubt I would spend money on a full rebuild. I am looking at advice from a maintenance perspective, or, perhaps a minor repair of a known problem area.

Do you guys think fluid and a filter would help my situation, or make it worse?

Should I use plain jane Dexron III? What do you all think of high mileage fluids like MaxLife Dexron III?

    Thanks everybody!

I think a saw a service bulletin about this a while back- maybe a broken accumulator spring.

that's what it sounds like to me. my 97 lumina 4T60E did the same thing during the 3-4 shift. That spring was broken. It was like that for a while and had to put 4th clutches in since they were burnt. there should be a very slight hesitation. it is hard to tell though. you might be able to help things with an adjustable modulator. but you'll still want to fix that spring. adding more line pressure will help some and firm up the shifts. just don't get greedy on how firm, or you will ruin the pump.
