  • 96 corsica xmission

Auto in 96 3100 corsica Drive train has 96,000 miles, seems to go into neutral when shifting from 1 to 2 on heavy acceleration. On slow acceleration it shifts fine. Also goes to neutral if it attempts to down shift to 2 from a higher gear. ie you try to accelerate through an intersection. Back off on the accelerator and it will shift into gear. Does not appear to slip once in gear, 3 and 4 are fine. Suprising me, I thought 4 would be a problem !!
Xmission was serviced recently. My code reader does not display xmission codes.
    Any ideas out there????????

How recently was that transmission serviced? Any chance that seal for the trans. filter could've got cut? My dad did that once... and it made the transmission slip.

I guess a bad modulator valve is possible. Check for ATF in the vacuum line. Doesn't seem too likely though.

I hate to ask... but I've done some stupid things in my time... is it full of fluid?

Other than that... I'm out of ideas.

It's not a vacuum mod on that car.

Mine ('98 Malibu) will do something similar, but only on upshift from 1 to 2, accelerating from a stop, mine also won't rev either.

I think my solution will be to swap to a manual, unless I hear of some other reason in this thread.

Your car has a different trans, bud. A '96 corsica has a vacuum modulator, and it COULD be the problem.

your malibu i beleive will be a 4t40e or 4t45e. his car will be a 4t60e, and that has a vacume mod.

Shifting into neutral? Or slipping? 2 totally different scenarios. Shifter position controls neutral. Unlocks all gears. Mechanical, not hydraulic.

If it slips, or has slipped, while in gear, time is limited. You have tranny problems.

And from your description, yours is slipping. Smell your tranny fluid. Also, check the color. Should be red, nothing else.

Most good tranny shops will pressure test for free.

neutral is a position on the shifter were no clutches are being applied, nor is the parking pawl applied.

now you can have a neutral like condition when not in neutral. this would be something like a 1-2 shift, but once it shifts second, there is no holding power, and you just rev.

back to the problem, it actualy sounds like yours is slipping. if it shifts ok at light throttle, but under heavy throttle it slips, you have worn out clutches. there is no quick fix, it needs to be overhauled.

werd. I just said that! More or less.

The AT is nothing more than a manual contolled by hydraulics. Neutral is neutral. That's why it is called neutral.

I agree with sharkey. Get thee hence to a GOOD tranny shop.

Dunno where you live, I got 1 here.

The ITs or Aamco will rip you. Or any franchised shop for that matter.

I get my 4T60-e done for 725 bux. Hard clutches included. I'm on 3, he also did the 3:33.

now im gonna go against you here, i work for a franchise shop. each shop in the chain is individualy owned and operated. not all of them will rip you off. the shop i work for is prices very competitivly compared to the other half dozen tranny shops in the area, and we are the only big franchise shop.

$725?? thats dam cheap. im guessing they are just replacing the clutches, converter, and an overhaul kit, and there is no hard part damage. that is very cheap. we usualy see them for somewere around $2500 (canadian), but thats including re/re.

sticky valves? broken accumlator springs? had a 93 cierra 4T60 that seemed to go into neutral in the 1-2 shift. it'd go ok then the engine would rev up and the car felt as if it went into neutral then BANG, into 2nd. had a broken 1-2 accumlator spring that caused the clutches to wear faster and burn.

                      fuck 4T60 trannies!!!!!!!

I'm only biased because i've blowed up two of them. Both of them the same description YOU'VE got was happening, as well as about 300% of any other 4T60 drivers.
Second gear clutch band was my problem.

Having a 96 you have the 4T60-E transmission, and it could be as simple as one of the little relays, wouldn't it? I've never worked on a 4T60-E, i'm done with automatics as a whole.
