  • 3.73 vs. 5 speed swap??

Ive been debating on doing either the 3.73 FDR or the 5 speed swap into my lumi and would like your input on the cost/time/performance of either because i belive with a slight amount of help i could do either and at my local junkyard i could most likley find the 284 and for sure find the parts for the FDR change so thats not really an issue. Thanks.

I dunno what would be better but... it sure would be cool as hell to have a 5speed Euro sedan.

Don't waste your time with the auto, if you have the time to do the swap - do it. The difference in auto to 5-speed is night and day, I will never waste my time with an auto again. I had the 3.73's and a 3000 stall, tons better than stock but a 5-speed Z34 still could have taken me, or at least made it close.

what do you think the hardest things to do would be, because the 284 does bolt right up correct? what about the clutch pedal mounting, are there factory holes or is there some fab that needs to be done? the wiring seems easy so that wouldnt be a problem. Thanks.

IN a 92, all the stuff is there to be either cut out (middle/passenger side firewall/floor). You need the clutch pedal and the bolt pretty much, and the brake pedal unless you want to cut it down to size. Dash should come out to replace the firewall plate for that of a 5 speed car. You can use a grinder to reshape the round hole but it won't line up the same way as the 5 speed plate would allow.

I wouldn't give up hope on an auto. Manuals are tricky to be consistant, let alone launch it. Of course its proven that you can do it, just ask oldskoolgp:P

If you have a reputable shop or know how to really get yourself into deep trubble (venturing the unknown to learn)..upgrade the auto. But if you just want out...get the 5spd..but even then..the 5spd needs some attention.

For what ever..if you find a 5spd TDC...steal the trans parts from it..THAT is the only 5spd I would swich over to over my built 3t40.

I really want to do the 5 speed swap but have yet to see a z-34 in the junk yard so the firewall plate would be almost impossible to get a hold of. whats the stock stall speed on the 4t60? where would be a good place to get one between 2500-3000? Im starting to lean a little towards the 3.73 fdr and a high stall converter just because of the avalibility of the parts to do it. what are your thoughts?

Most w-body or heavy body cars/vans have the 2100 stall speeds. 2500-3000K that would be on 98+ 2.2l cars...like the Cavi. Some Quad 4s had 2500 stalls.

Some trans shops can get the Tq converter with your desired stall speed...but I perfer 98+ tq converter for thier woven graphite converters.

the only thing graphite in them is the lockup clutch, and thats because 98+ they have modulated lockup.

q4 torque convertor is 3k stall.

clutches for 284's are expensive too.

so all q4's are 3000 and all 98+ 2.2's are 2500-3000 correct? im positive i can find one of those at the yard. do they hook right up or will i need to modify? Thanks.

My 284 clutch was 200 bucks. Not bad imo.
