  • Wierd 4T60-E problem...

Having a wierd problem with my 4T60-E tranny. It's in a 95 Monte with 3.4L DOHC. I'll be driving down the road at a constant speed and it will downshift into 3rd for no reason. I try manually shifting to 3rd and back to 4th, romping on the gas to downsift to 2nd, and putting it in neutral and back into 4th.... still nothing. The only way I can get it to go back into 4th is to put it in neutral and shut the car off (still going down the road), restart the engine and put back into 4th. The car will then shift into 4th normally. There is no certain speed range this happens at. It has done it at 70MPH and at 45MPH. I have changed out the tranny fluid and filter. There was no metal or anything in the pan or on the magnet. The old oil was still a dark reddish color. I plan on pulling the vacuum modulator and checking it out. I also am going to check vacuum lines to the modulator. I have very limited knowledge on trannys so I am unsure if this can cause the problem. Another problem that may or may not be related is when I romp on the gas and downsift to 2nd the engine will speed up to @6000 rpm but the tranny will not shift to 3rd until I let up on the pedal. Thanx for any info!

your tranny is starting to go. i would suggest looking for a used one or start calling and getting quotes for a rebuild soon.

the 4th gear fall out is a sure sign that the tranny is starting to fail. depending on your mileage, you might be able to just fix the problem, but your probably better off having a rebuild done since this problem is just the beginning of things that will fail with age.

Yup - it's going. Mine did that for about 6 months, then it finally bit the big one yesterday. I knew it was gonna happen, at least it made it through winter.
