4T60 locked in all fwd gears

my mom has a 91 lumina with a 3.1 and 4T60(440-T4) transaxle. a couple weeks ago she was driving it and heard a grinding noise, then the wheels locked. up till then the thing worked perfectly. the car goes fine in reverse. it will also go fine forward for about a foot then lock solid, until you put it into reverse. will not roll forward in neutral.

sounds like a problem with the differential to me. any insight?

probably yoink the engine/trans this weekend since its supposed to be WARM and start looking around. but the less i have to dig into the tranny the better.

yeah id definately say that it is not interal within the tranny itself nor in the axels

Pull the differential out and see what it looks like. You should be able to do that with the tranny still in the car. But, I'm thinking that is probably what it is.

something has gone kaboom inside.. either the diff or a planetary gear... either way the transmission will have to come out... diff you can fix in the car but it's NOT! recomended.. when the diff blows up all the metal contaminates the entire unit.. Metal shavings can plug up the valve body, filter.. they get trapped in clutch packs, and bands..
