  • What 5 speed

Ok I have a 1990 turbo grand prix.. at this point The motor is out and being compleatl overhauled and lots of upgrade are in store... So my question is what choices do I have for a tranny.. I know that all the 2.8/3.1/3.4 ect interchange but with the increase in horse power and the fact that I am a very agresive driver leads me to want a very strong tranny and clutch.. 5 speed of cours... Any thoughts .. I know I will probly have to take it in and have everything upgraded but I am not a tranny man so I dont even know what to have done when I pic a tranny.........

You either have a Muncie 282 or 284. Do not worry about them they are very strong.

stick with a 282... The 284's you can't get parts for if it ever needs a rebuild.. Both are pretty strong 5 speeds stock so you wont have to worry about either of them..

See that search thingy at the top of the page that blinks to catch newbie's attention? Yah....it works....

Anyways, you'll need everything you'll normaly need for a tranny swap. The new tranny, axles, shifter, shifter cables, pedal assembly, and a reprogrammed chip.

A guy named TGPilot over at www.w-body.com/forum/index put a Getrag 282 into his TGP, he'll be able to help. LukeZ34, from the same site, is the current owner of the car. There are a few other 5-speed TGPs over there as well.

I have a 5 speed TGP, and I'm the only one that I know of that uses a 284. I can answer your questions on the swap, but most of the answers are already out there.

What's your handle on the TGP boards??
