ive heard from more than one person now that it is possible to shift without the clutch in a manual and not grind the gears
is this possible and if so how?
it's real easy, I only use the clutch to start and stop, otherwise I always float the gears.
it's simple - practice between 3rd and 4th - it's much easier... but anyhow..
while driving (normally, not hard) let off the gas and start pullin' the shifter towards 4th, and hold it there, till it eventually falls into place without grinding - it takes SOME pressure, but not tons.

When you down shift, put the stick in neutral, tap the gas to get the rpm's up, and put it in gear. Takes more time to get the down shift right then the up shift. And you can't be flogging the car!
yea i have been doing that for a long time now. i can go right from 1st to 5th back to 1st without touching the clutch.
now it isnt great for your syncros. if you dont grind, its not to hard on them, but puts exess stress on them. when you grind is when things break.
for racing, if you have a good clutch and get a lot of practice, just lightly touch the pedal and pull the next gear, and dont let off the throttle. if done right, your rpm shouldnt hardley jump up. this is hard on syncros though. if you are building a race tranny, then cut every other tooth off the syncro. this will allow you to just rip it through the gears without touching the clutch.
Don't do this on the Getrag 284, it is just asking for problems. Better to change a clutch every few thousand miles than have to buy a new tranny.
btw, yall can trust me on this one as well from personnel experience.
In fact, my 284 won't even shift without the clutch without grinding. it is very tempremental. And yes I knwo how to do it and do it all the time in other cars.
hey colin when i asked youa bout how the bird is in the winter
i thought about something
have you ever tried starting in like 2nd or 3rd
thought maybe that would help with traction
no there is no point even trying to drive the bird in the winter.. 3 years ago even when it wasnt close to as much power as it is now it was unbelievably stupid to drive... the next problem is that i dont have any Winter tyres/All seasons for it anymore. there is only a set of BFG t/a KD's on there (Dry traction only) in the wet these are bad. about 2 years ago getting it ready to park for the winter it snowed before i had a chance to do a few things. so i had to drive it on the KD's big mistake. it took me 20 feet (even while pumping the pedal not locking it up and sliding) to come to a stop only going 10km per hour (5mph)
why risk having the car writen off and have more Rust/weathering on it, when i have an AWD Subaru Legacy for a winter car that i absolutely Love to drive in the snow. this car has made snow/winter fun again for driving. it used to be I cant wait untill the snow is gone. but with this thing its changed that attitude.
