Are there any extreme firewall mods to swap a Getrag 282 or 284 into a Lumina Z34? (By extreme I mean like intense cutting, hammering, shaping, and other shit like that there) Also, which trans would be better for my application?

Actually, I was reading through an older post about building up the automatic. What all can be done to that? Is the 4T65-E any better than the 60-E? What about torque converters, anything about one better than the other? Sorry for all the Q's, but nothing better to do right now.1993 Lumina Z34 - Broke Yet Again

The 5 speed swap has been done by a few people, including myself. FOr the firewall, you gotta pull a plate out of it and swap it with the 5 speed....or you can modify the hole for the clutch hydraulic mount. It wouldn't be quite right but you can make it work. Other than that, hole saw is about all you need and the clutch pedal. Its not a simple or fast swap but worth it IMO, especially if you like a manual trans. You would want the 284 for the better gearing and higher torque capacity. 282 can be built up and you can swap gears out to get close ratio with it as well so thats really up to you.Ben

Just some info for you.1995 Pontiac GTP
Over $12K invested, and still its slow. Maybe thats because thats most all repairs. Don\'t knock the engine though, because thats the only part that has seemed to last.

*ALL* Z-34's got the 4T60-E (440T4-E) from 91 thru 94.
Building up a 4T60-E is fairly easy tho, you don't have to be a master mechanic to make one work - but you do have to be mechanically inclined to do the job.
