My friend has a '93 Lumina 3.1/Auto. He started it up and put it in gear and it made a big clunk and the car just revs freely. The tranny has 185k on it...so it doesn't suprise me. He just changed the filter/fluid last week, so could that be related? I'm pretty sure it can't be just a little problem, but is there anything minor that any of you think it might be??? Also, what do you think it would cost to get it rebuilt, or get a used one? I'm wondering because even though my friend has given up on the car, he said he would sell it to me for $500, so if I can fix the tranny (was already quoted $700 by the repair shop right next to the detail shop I work at for a used one installed) for fairly cheap, I think it might be a good buy.
Any ideas on cost, or what could be wrong with the tranny are greatly appreciated.
Also, does anyone know what the final drive ratio is on this tranny?
