  • 4l80e and 60*v6's

Have a question from someone regarding the 4l80e and the 60degreev6's that I really didnt know the for sure answer to.
Do they share the same bolt pattern, or will it need to have the bellhousing swapped? From what I remember, all 4l80e's had bolt on bellhousings that could be swapped out with something different.

They never came with a small corporate pattern (60v6, 3800, 4cyls etc) or removable housings. There's an aftermarket company that has a removable housing and I have seen adapter kits for the 3800 that will work on the 660.

Do they make the bell housing to fit the trans or do they make an adapter than you have to weld in place?

A 4L80E is way more transmission for a 60V6 than you would ever need. A well built 4L60E would be plenty strong enough for a V6.

4L60E can be built to take around 600 HP, 4L65E should be a little better.

If he doesn't need overdrive a TH350 would be a much better option.. and lighter IIRC. Yes there are SBC to 60v6 bellhousing adapters. Mars has a 3500/TH350 in his Camaro.

I do believe the whole intent is to be able to drive it to the drag strip and race it then drive it back home. Around here, you have to take the freeway if you plan to get to the strip under a couple hours. Otherwise it's 3+ hours one way thru many cities in which are ticket happy.

I suggested the manual trans option, but that wasn't being heard.

I guess it's safe to assume you are doing this for a customer.
You may want to suggest he use an Allison trans.
I spent three or four months loading 4L60 and 4L80 transmissions onto the backside of engines in GM's truck plant. Even using a hoist you could feel the extra weight of the 4L80E. They are heavy pigs.
If you have them on hand, set both trannies side by side and place his engine beside them. When he sees that the 4L80E is damn near as big as his engine he may change his tune. If he doesn't, charge him extra for lugging that pig around.

I am not doing any of the work. They are doing all the labor work. The only thing they may be outsourcing is the wiring, and I am not doing that either. I would bet that the mpg would be awesome with the 80e.

given the choice between a 4L60 and 4L80, i'd go 80 every time, even if only for the extra torque capacity.

A 4L80E is around 230 lbs with fluid and converter.. the 60E is about 180.. a T56 is about 130

It's a good trans but man that's a lot of weight to add to a car.

50lbs over a 60E, but will net better end results and probably go right in without needing internal touch ups. I would actually like to see it completed, but it seems more involved than what meets the eye.

the big question is... will it even fit in the trans tunnel.
