the 06 version has always been the cheapest IIRC, since GM liquidated them when they made the 07-08 version. there isn't a whole lot of difference between the two versions either, mostly gear ratios and something about the synchros?

a few people have already done so... forced_firebird comes to mind, someone else is running a blown 3500 as well, but the screenname escapes me ATM, he's running a TKO500.
but in reality, you can use any trans that either has a bellhousing for the GM Small Metric pattern or anything that will adapt to it with a spacer/adapter. the most common(and probably the cheapest) one i can think of off-hand is the 60V6/90V6 T5 as used in the third and 4th gen F-bodies, i doubt a 3500 would break it, unless it has some serious mods going with it.

Well, all of us that are currently doing it are doing it in existing RWD vehicles (me a Mustang, everyone else a Camaro), so we're just using the stock pieces. If you are wanting to convert a FWD to RWD, then there will be a lot more work to do, but you can virtually use rear axle you want (just make it fit), and then get a custom driveshaft for the length needed.-Brad-

There are lots of people running 3X00 engines in MGBs. Most are using the Ford T5-Z transmission but a few are using 700R4s. My MGB has an LZ9 3900 with a Ford T5-Z transmission. Below is a picture of an LX9 with a 3400 UIM and Ford T5 just before being shipped. The complete assembly, as shown, is going into an Austin Healey and weighs 470# including starter, ALT, electric water pump, A/C bracket, headers, wiring harness and ECM.

Thanks guys. Everything on that engine was either polished aluminum or low gloss black paint/powdercoat. The picture doesn't do it justice. He will be ceramic coating the headers once he decides the final length of the down tube.
The 3X00 engines are nice in small RWD cars. Excellent performance, reliable and great fuel mileage. Can't ask for much more than that.MinusOne - 3100 - 4T60E
