  • Getrag 284 Questions

    Hello,

I have been thinking more and more about swapping in a Getrag 284 Transmission into my 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo Z34 3.4L. One reason being it would be nice for performance reasons, it would also be a change in pace, but mostly because I am getting tired with the BS problems the 4T60E has.

My question to you guys is, how do I check this thing out to make sure its ok before I purchase it and install it. I know this is not a "very serviceable" unit. I also know it like the T-56's of the FWD drive world; very strong. I may have found one I just want to make sure it is up to par before I purchase it, spend $$ on a swap and install it.

Make sure it doesn't bind when moving the shift levers by hand, check the fluid condition, ask the previous owner about it's shifting quality is what I can think of off the top of my head. Maybe drain it and check for shavings too.

Thanks for the tip... original owner says it was given to him when he purchased his car. He knows nothing about it. So I am not sure what I am going to do. I have also been online here in the for sale section hoping that a 284 and all the other parts required turn up in a part-out.

If you have any more tips, let me know,

      Dan
