  • Question : 94 GTP-what years is the trans compatible with?

i have a 1994 GTP with a crap title (odo discrepancy because my gf's aunt swapped clusters with one that had like 6-8k more miles than that car did, stupid!!) ive decided to part it out completely.

my question is, what all years/vehicles have a computer that would be able to control this trans? its the 3.4 DOHC lq1 with auto trans.

all 3.4 trannies had a 3.43 FDR, nothing else had that gearset. the 94 also uses PWM torque convertor control, something that only existed from 94-96 in the 3.4 4t60-e(since 97 was 4t65-e)

so any 94-96 3.4 tranny would work.

that's for if you want to swap it, but from your post it sounds like you want a tranny controller?

nope-im partin it, just tryin to find out what years/cars this trans could go into with the stock computer controlling it.

so other than the torque converter is there anything stronger about these transmissions than the standard 4t60-e? & whats so special about the torque converter?

      thanks for your help man

in that case, it's a direct replacement for any 94-96 3.4 equipped W.

the torque cinvertor is "special" due to it being a pulse width modulated convertor. it could probably be used in earlier models as well, but i won't guarantee it. connectors may be different.

what about if the connectors were adapted?

i'm seeing 93 as having the same connector as the 94-up, but 92 has a different part number, but they are all 7 pin conectors, so it could be chopped off and a new one soldered on, or possibly just removing the pins and wiring from one and into the other.

but would the 92-96 computers (auto computers) be able to control it just fine with the connectors adapted/everything properly wired?

of course. the 91-93 3.4 cars came with a 16149396 PCM that controls a 4t60-e from the factory.

if it's any indication, my tranny uses a PWM TCC and i'm running it on the 16149396 and haven't had any issues with it.

what about the 3.1/3100 vehicles from 91-95?

3.1 cars didn't get the 60-e until 1993(W only), 3100 at the same time(late cutlass supremes only in 1993).

but they used a 3.33 FDR instead of 3.43. VSS reluctor is the same though.

would it be possible to mate it to a 93+ w body without a controller, given the different fdr? if so what would be necessary?

                      as usual, helpful as hell

controller? the ECM does control the tranny... that's why i keep refering to it as a PCM...

the 3% difference in FDR probably won't make any major difference, but it should be considered.

im just wanting to know for anyone who wants to know if this trans will work in their car without any major changes/modifications.

thanks for your help man, when i need to know electrical about these vehicles you seem to know your shit, whatever you're doing keep it up!!

i wouldn't consider changing just the connector a major modification, so any 4t60e equipped 3.4 car or any 3.1/3100 car with a 4t60-e and had 3.33/3.29 gears would probably be fine. it would change driveability a little bit, but shouldn't be anything serious.

if you should need wiring diagrams, let me know.

EDIT: assuming the mounts are the same. with a W, it's a guarantee it will work. other body styles may be different.
