  • Getrag 282 differential differences? and 5th gear?

I just recently noticed these differentials have different tooth patterns and count. I havent counted them but its obvious from looking. The smaller dif with the coarse teeth is from a 90 ish beretta while the slightly larger finer cut teeth is from a achieva, supposedly its 3.94 but I havent actually counted it yet.

Also I want to swap the v6 5th gear onto the 3.94 trans, do you think I would have to swap the 5th/reverse syncro with it?

    3.61 and 3.94 were the only 2 FDR's available in the HM282..

I wouldn't use the 3.94 diff, i made that mistake and wasted a year of racing trying to break into the 13's.. went back to the stock 3.61 trans and almost broke into the 12's.

If you have the cash i'd just swap the good 4th into a 3.61 trans and enjoy it.

I dont get what you mean by the good fourth gear? Now I havent counted the teeth on either gearset but I assumed the 3.94 had different ratios through all the gears. Now I have 3 getrags to play with, 2 3.61's, and an olds 3.94 (It was the right model and the right year so I'm just assuming its a 3.94 from what everyone has said on the boards). Now I am definately going to count the teeth on every gear and do the math myself. Now I'm planning on doing the scca thing with my car and the dragstrip thing. one tranny for dragging and one for scca.

supposedly the 3.94 olds has a worse 5th gear than the other getrags. I wont need it for racing but I'd like to still have the mpg for on the highway thats why i want to swap 5th out for a v6 5th. Now on the other hand they say you can burn 1st gear off with a 3.94 trans in a v6 and i'm planning on boost as well but how often do you use first in racing? would trying to mix and match gears between the dif trans be worth it or would there be too much of a rpm drop to be worth it?

I'm going to have team green inserts too.

As soon as it's back up i'll link you to a graphical gear ratio calculator that will really help you out.

Untill then, check out this page.. http://60degreev6.com/forum/f76/gear-ratios-t25036

the '89 Quad 4 trans is the best match for a V6. You get the better 4th gear (1.03) and the better 5th gear (.72) with the 3.61 FDR.

        '89 Quad 4:

        1st...3.50
        2nd...2.19
        3rd...1.38
        4th...1.03
        5th...0.72
        FDR...3.61

        I had a '93 W41 trans on my cammed 3500,

        1st 3.50
        2nd 2.05
        3rd 1.38
        4th 1.03
        5th 0.81
        Axle 3.94

65 MPH was like 3000 or 3500 RPM in 5th gear, it was miserable. I was getting about 12 MPG on the highway.. lol

I put back in the V6 trans, here are the stock ratios..

        1st 3.50
        2nd 2.05
        3rd 1.38
        4th 0.94
        5th 0.72
        Axle 3.61

That with a welded diff got me .7 faster in the 1/4 mile, similar trap speeds.

I would just use the V6 trans, leave the Quad 4 trannies on Quad 4's.
