  • Question : Will a 96' 4T60-E work in a 91'?

    Hey everyone,

As far as I know, I though that I can't use the 96' 4T60-E in my 91' but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I would have to switch to OBD II right?

    Thanks

Yes, you would need a 4t60e compatible ECM to control it, and no thats not necessarily OBDII... there were some OBDI.5 ones that worked. 94-95 Beretta's had the 60e but were OBDI.5.

You could also just use the stock ECM as is, and buy a FAST controller from Ben. That may be easier than going to OBDII.

4T60E was first introduced in 91 with the DOHCs, so there are OBD1 ECMs out there that will control it just fine. There have been some minor changes between the years, but overall it is the same tranny. Might just have to change the connector (or pins).

Use the 93 code that Robert uses for his 3100/4t60-e ODBI "downgrade" from obd1.5....

It would have 3.4 TDC code and 4t60-E code stock... boom there ya go.

Not sure, but you have a good chance it would drop in, since it would be from a 93 W body with 3.4TDC...

Robert had to change wires around since he had a 95 N body. He probably has the wiring diagrams and could say for sure or not.

You would really need to see the wiring diagrams for the 2 trannies you are dealing with to tell for sure. I know that in 93-94, there were 6 different wiring setups in the 4T60-Es, depending on sensors, PWM modulation, etc...

Hmm oh yeah. Well in that case the only wiring if he is lucky would be the trans wiring at the plug. A good chance being a W body the ECM wiring would be the same though.

isaac: i have a W, but the wiring is very largely the same. i'll be able to look more into this when my internet is working right and i don't have to steal a wi-fi connection...

as far as everything working: it should so long as the 96 4t60-e still has a vacuum modulator. i know there are some minor internal differences comparing a 4t60e with one that does have a PWM TCC lockup compared to the non-PWM, but its nothing to worry about.

I was able to drop in a 95/96 (dont remember) 4t60-e / 3.4dohc into my 93 that already had a 4t60-e/3.1 but I swapped in the entire assembly with wiring, ecm , fuse center and all. I did have to change some pins on the C100? connector onthe firewall but i dont think any were transmission related.

If the question is if you can just do a straight replacement, it will not work properly without the ECM and programming change. In later year 4t60-e's more solonoids are used.
                    I modify stuff

All 4T60-E's had vacuum modulated line pressure.
