  • Jeep Flywheel Question

Will a flywheel from a Sunbird 3.1 engine fit a Firebird 3.1 engine? From what I have read they are the same engine.

One is going to be an iron head engine and one is going to be an aluminum head engine. As for the flywheel being the same, it probably depends on the year of the Firebird if it is going to be internally balanced or externally (using the flywheel).

The engine is from a 91 Pontiac Firebird 3.1 L 191. It had a auto and I am putting the engine in a 90 Jeep Wrangler w/5 speed manual. SACHS had a flywheel but they only specify for a Sunbird. I am also transfering the ECU and wiring harness from the Firebird into the Jeep. Any ideas?

What engine did your Jeep have originally? More importantly, what transmission will you be using? Some Jeeps came with a 2.8L, in which case you'd use that flywheel (assuming it's neutrally balanced). But the 90's didn't use the 2.8L... need more info.

I think this question should be broken off into it's own thread.

The original Jeep engine is a 2.5 I4. The transmission is an A5 (not the AX15). General comment is to swap trans along with engine. But "IT" has not given me any problems in over 10 years and I don't plan to do any radical trails with this vehicle. It is a daily driver. The 3.1 will bolt directly to the 2.5 as the engine bolt patten and the trans bolt pattern are the same. I have been questioning the flywheel isssue because I was told I would need to use a GM flywheel.

I used this 142 tooth flywheel, used on lots of GMs (and a few Isuzus):

The Jeeps that had a 2.8L use a 148 tooth flywheel like this one:

BUT, I really have no idea what your tranny would take.

Went to the website and compared flywheels. some part number for Firebird and Sunbird. Don't know the difference you metioned about neutral balance, iron head, aluminum. But the key is the flywheel has to bolt up to the engine and be the right one. Well ! off to work I goes!

Same part numbers for Firebird and SunBird.

What is your engine from. In one post you said Sunbird, and the other you said Firebird.

Firebird makes sense, that's a RWD engine.

Nevermind, I just re-read the post. I'm still not sure why we care about the sunbird if you're dealing with a firebird engine in a jeep. Did someone specifically tell you that a sunbird flywheel will mate a firebird engine with your jeep tranny? What about the clutch?

Reread post #3 now. He was stating that a manufacturer had a flywheel, but the only listed application was a Sunbird.

I am searching for a flywheel for the Firebird engine. I found one but the wholeseller only specified that it would fit a Sunbird. Therefore my original question. The presure plate clutch will have to match up to the flywheel. Somewhere I read and have been told that the clutch disk will work as long as the spline count is the same. Once I have that resolved I only have to play with the wiring harness conversion. Which is the reason I was also asking about wiring diagrams. There are some functions of the harness that go to instruments that the jeep does not have so I don't need to match them up to the Jeep. The links I was given provided me with a way to look at part numbers and resolve that issue, so now I can proceed with the wiring issue.

                      Thanks!
