  • Found the culprit for trans failure

So it appears that the trans cooler in the radiator broke and leaked coolant in the transmission and tranny fluid in the coolant.... What an amasing mess... So i drained the fluid and replaced the filter then going to get it flushed and do another filter and fluid again.... Hopefully it works a little better.... And ofcourse need a radiator.... What a PITA!

Any thoughts... think it will be toast or might work out for me...?

Hard to say, I caught mine when it happened, as the temp gauge was reading a little higher than normal, and so I checked the coolant level and found ATF in the coolant fill tank.. I dropped the pan and filter and flushed it put found no coolant in the trans, it was high enough pressure to not let it back flow and I caught it in time.

The clutches are paper I think or something like that, and coolant and water destroy moving bearings/parts but who knows, you may luck out. Can't hurt to try I guess.

The problem is that the glue they use on the clutches, including the Torque Convertor Clutch is water soluble. Coolant damages the clutches first, then takes out the small bearings. Best to overhaul the unit and replace the torque convertor.
Needless to say, you'll need to completely flush the cooling system also.

I personally would just plug off the trans cooler holes in the radiator, forget the new one and buy an aftermarket trans cooler.

              Or do a 5-speed swap.
