  • Transmission Fluid Change

    I have a 96 Cutlass Supreme Sl with the 3100 and 4l60E.

    It runs perfect currently.

I don't know when the last time the tranny fluid was changed.

The car has 140,000 Miles and I have had it for 3 years and 50000 miles and never have changed it.

The reason I haven't changed it is because people have told me that it is not good to change the fluid on a tranny with high mileage.

My transmission pan gasket slightly leaks so the trany does get new fluid in it rather often.

I add about a total of a quart per month.

Tranny shifts fine, car runs great.

    What should I do?

    Thanks,

    Dan

Drop the pan, fix the gasket and just add enough fluid to fill it. Oh and change the filter too.

You may want to install a drain plug or buy a pan with one. It is not a good idea to completly flush the trans with new fluid if it has been in there for a long time. But it is a good idea to drain and add fluid on a regular basis to eventually give your tans a new batch of fluid.

If you add that much fluid that often, you don't need a flush. If anything, I'd find a place that just does a fluid exchange. From what I understand, a flush involves cleaners with fresh fluids.

You don't want to flush it right away. The old varnish and junk that has collected in the trans will come loose and clog up small orifices. It is better to slowly remove it by adding new fluid every so often. Break it all loose right away and you could open up some problems.
