  • CV joint comparison

    I've got an '89 Cavalier Z24 with a 2.8L and HM282 5 speed.

I went to buy new CV axles for it today and I ran into a little problem:
The car originally came with Ball & Cage (Rzeppa) style joints for all 4 CV joints. One of the CV axles (driver's side) I got was exactly the same (both sides had Ball CV joints), but the other axle had 1 Ball and 1 Tripod (Tulip) style CV joint on it.

My question is, which style of CV joint is "better" (ie. stronger, longer life)? I'm thinking that the Tripod style superceded the Ball style, but it was my understanding that the Ball was the better (albeit costlier) of the two. It just doesn't make sense why one is the same and the other changed.

Can anyone forsee and problems from using the Tripod CV axle instead of the Ball?
