  • 5 speed swap a few questions.

thanks for reading, Im converting my 89 grand prix to 5 speed, im getting all the parts from an 89. My only concerns right now are where to get a manual flywheel for my 90 3.1. Another question is, i dont think the 5 speed car had Abs so how is that going to affect my situation seeing that i have ABS.

I have a spare flywheel I could send you. It's for a 3.4 DOHC but it should be the same as a 3.1. As far as ABS, it won't affect your swap in any way.
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

This is just one example: 87-93 berettas. The 2.8/3.1 FWD fly wheel will work with 3400's too.

          1994 3100 BERETTA. 200,000+ miles
          16.0 1/4 mile when stock. Now ???
          Original L82 Longblock
          with LA1, LX9, LX5 parts
Manifold-back 2.5" SS Mandrel Exhaust. Hardware is SS too.

Hey whats the easiest way to drop out a 282? Remove axles, drop subframe on one side but loosen all 4 bolts? Remove rack from subframe, now my question is when i drop the subframe, do i have to secure the motor or does it matter? How high do i have to have to body of the car to sucessfully do this? id like to at least get the axles and tranny so the next day i can get the rest of the little stuff...

I pulled a 282 out of a z24 at the yard in about an hour and a half.

Unbolt struts up top, and take off the alxe nuts(30 mm). Now unbolt the trans torque strut, and drop the subframe. Cut the brake lines and all the other crap that holds you up.

The subframe will not fall al the way down, becayse the axles are holding it up. Pull the subframe as far to one side as you can, then you can get one axle out, then pull it to the other side and take the other axle out. Now crawl back under, and unbolt the intermediate shaft from the block. If it dosent come out because its sandwitched between a motor mount, its ok, it will slide out in a later step.

Then pull the starter and the flywheel access panel. Now your doen for now under the car.

Now start up top. Basicly just rip crap out untill you can see the bellhousing nice and clearly. Remove the shift cables, and the slave line. Take the exhaust crossover pipe off. Now unbolt all of the bellhousing bolts except 2, but back those 2 out a few turns.

Now find some tires in the yard and put them under the oil pan of the motor, that way the motor is suported and you can slide the trans off. Now unbolt the top trans mount and let it fall. Unthread the 2 remaining bellhousing and slide the trans out.

Then you can unbolt the clutch and get yourself the felwheel too, and take all the other parts you need.

Thats how I did it, but you will find your own ways.

just go to the store and ask for a flywheel for a 90 grand prix with a 3.1 and manual.

Post a pic, me or other members wil be able to identify it.

One thing to keep in mind is that you need to find axles that will work with the 5-speed, but also have the reluctor rings on it for the abs. Idk when the grans prix's went to abs, but you need axles from a 5-speed gp with the abs. Just buy them new, thats wha im going to do.
