T-5 flywheel... need help

I'm new to the 60-V6 world. I just bought a beefed up 2.8V MPI from a 87 Camero. I couldn't beat the price $800 for a complete motor that has all the goodies. The engine is for my VW project .. check out the Link http://s241.photobucket.com/albums/ff42/Jogyver/


Well the issue I have right now is that I have a 84 S10 T5 5spd manual trans and of course would like to hook it up to the V6. Which flywheel do I use Camero or S10? Do I go with a 1988+ neutral balanced flywheel? Does anyone have a casting #?
Where would I find a new one at?

First we need to know if the trans is From a Camaro or S-10. You will spot a Camaro one easily because everything is tilted towards the drivers side of the car. The S-10 one is straight up and down. This will tell you what flywheel model to go with.

In 87 the Camaro should be internal balance. If you are going to dig into the motor at all then pop the pan off and look at the crank. If you see a round disc in the middle of the crank then it is internal balance and you of course use a neutral balance flywheel.

Its a S10 T5 trans . We took it out of an S10. The engine came out of a 87 Firebird.

Then you need an S-10 flywheel. I am not 100% sure on the balance in that year so you will have to check. If you can check the rear main seal and see if it is a one or two piece seal that will tell you the balance too. One piece seal will denote internal balance.

On the topic of the s10 fly wheel, is there an upgrade from the gm part bin for the 92 s10 flywheel?

You can't really upgrade a flywheel.

Make sure you use the externally balanced S10 flywheel. I.e. it should be from the same as year as the motor, or earlier..

Can't really do that since the S-10 and Camaro changed balance in different years. In the last year of external balance some S-10s were internal and some were external. It was hit or miss.

I was wondering if there was a light weight flywheel in the gm parts bin.

Sure you can. You just need to look at the flywheel to see which one it is. The externally balanced flywheels are pretty obviously externally balanced. If it looks neutral, get a different one.

Yea telling flywheels apart is easy. But trying to identify the random donor motor you picked up isn't as easy.

look at the inside of the harmonic balancer...
On the neutral balanced dampner, all of thr "finger's" are the same...
On the external balanced, one has added material.....
