  • 93 3,4l dohc 4t60e tranny rebuils tomorrow...help

I am having my 93 vert, 3.4l DOHC tranny rebuilt tomorrow.

    Any suggestions?

    So far…..

The shop agreed to help me beef it up a little and willing to let me assist a little with parts etc.

    Typical shop clutch packs etc.
    1-2 metal thrust washer from a 4T65e
    Transgo Jr. going in
    Spacers on accumulator springs
Aftermarket Hardened reaction shell and sungear…Timken I think
    ATF+3 fluid

I’ve read about a different diode sprag but haven’t figured that out yet.

What about torque specs? This is a little bit of a Podunk tranny shop so I need to emphasis torqueing the pan bolts…right?

Anything anyone may offer will be appreciated.

Learn to build one yourself... but thats just my opinion.

I wouldnt have a podunk trans shop doing much "performance" stuff to my tranny, but there are some other 65e parts that can be swapped in, look at the Engineered performance 4t60e thread.

Podunk was not really a dis to the shop.

They have been in business...at that location for 29 years. Its an old gas station. Crap piled up everywhere and its the nastiest shop I have ever been in. Nice folks that talk straight though.

I sit here thinking about my new white baby with a new white top floating around in tranny slop.

I went down friday and put a steering wheel cover on and used some carpet mask I had laying around and cover the carpets, console, door handle, panel etc for protection.

I can imagine one of those "good Ol' boys" laying a greasy hand up on the new white canvas and I shudder.

It was going to cost me $150 to tow the car to my town and then find a trans shop....I dont know a mechanic locally and would be fishing for luck. I found a trans shop in the town where I rescued the car last week and after talking to the guys at Podunck garage...I figure...since their price was inline ....it was a $150 discount on repairs.

I also got a little creative and managed to convince the "Boys" that they needed a website and was able to barter a 3 yr web package for the trans repair. Not bad.

Well I know what your saying, sometimes a shop like that, IF you know them well is the best place to get work done. Some of these high dollar in and out shops half ass everything they can just to get the money and get the cars out... This is what turned me away from shops all together. I only bring my car to TWO shops, One I'm good friends with the owner, he does my exhaust work and also tire mounting, which I help with quite often anyways... and the other one is a GM dealership up where I work, I know the guy who does alignments and they do mine there, along with them being my emissions test station as well.

BUT the rebuild you have lined up sounds ok, I'm confused on what a 65e metal thrust washer is referring to, but I'd have to look that up in my book... IIRC all the thrust washers on the rotating assy are metal, the only plastic ones are on the drive gears.

I'm in the process of doing my trans and I just replaced all the bushings last night and cleaned everything out and did all the seals, and pistons... I bought a full rebuild kit so its got just about everything you could ever want... except the 2-1 manual band... I was confused on if that got left out or not.

But yeah I hope to be putting my trans together wed night because I'm currently waiting on a hardened reaction shell and new 4th gear hub.

Pictures of my trans distruction is in my pinky project thread in V6 Performance.

Hi, I'm about to rebuild my first 4T60E to go back into my 1995 Grand Prix GTP. I have rebuilt rear drive trannies before and they are all still running. I have the tranny spread out on my work bench ready to assemble once my kit comes in. I do have a question for you, did you use any special tranny tools for assembly? I have a bench fixture but didn't know if I could get away with the CLUTCH ASSEMBLY TOOL that is used to hold everthing together when you drop them in? These are around $180 bucks and I don't want to spend the money if you can get by without it.

Also to others, rebuilding a tranny is not to tough as long as you have the ATSG manual and video. If you can do major engine work or rebuilds, tranny's are not that tough. I only suggest you have a long enough work bench to spread out the assemblies as you pull them. Having a well organized setup to work on helps alot!

Yeah having space is not what I have. With the car pulled in I have just enough room to walk, and can set stuff on a washing machine and dryer, but that won't work for a trans! LOL. I'd probably snag a spare trans at a yard or from someone that has one lying around and rebuild it, then swap it in. I know someone that has one out of a grand am lying around and it still works when pulled.
