  • 5 speed swap

Ok today I found a 1990 Beretta with a 3.1 5 speed what I was wondering was how hard would it be to swap the 5 speed in to my 94 z26 with a 3100 auto

  • #2
It will bolt up to your engine without a problem. For the rest of the info, theres a compete swap write up on v6z24.com Granted its for a cavi, most of the info is helpful.

Im doing the swap right now in my 95 beretta, so ask me anything your curios about.

Yeah you'll need to weld in the mount.

There is a few wiring tweaks to do so that the car will rev past 4K (put the park/drive switch in drive) and cut a wire so the auto locks are not always locking the doors, and how too hook up the reverse lights. Heavywoody on bstuff.com knows the stuff. I have the info saved on a computer somewhere here.

i made a mount for bangedupjeep (i don't think he has been on here for awhile) i just used 2 thick wall tubes one that bolt (that connect the bracket on the trans to the bracket on the car) fit through with very little play and the other one was about a 1/2" bigger on the I.D. than smaller one's O.D. I centered the small one inside of the big one and tacked it together with bailing wire and filled the gap with with polyurethane liquid nails and then cut off the bailing wire when the liquid nails cured. it works great and its cheap, he always drives like a bat out of hell and i made about 8 months ago for his 95 beretta with a 3400 and 282 and it not showing any signs of wear.

also you should make a shorter dogbone to realign the cv shafts, the 282 brings them slightly closer to the motor compared to a 4t60. its not required for the swap but if your motor is not stock it will help you plant and get rid of the wheel hop

Good point. You dont have to make a shorter dog bone though, you can simpally move the mounting hole back one inch. In some cases, people have found that there mount already has the hole you need, since in 92 and 93 the same mounts were used, but it was also offered in a 5-speed.

Ill be taking many, many pics as I do my swap.

My buddies beretta didn't have any extra bolt holes or room to move the dogbone over so I used 1/2" chromoly rod ends with seamless DOT tie rod tubing.

Pics of this custom mount and also what you are talking about with the dogbone would be awesome. If the axles are closer to the motor wouldn't you want a longer dogbone to push the motor and axles back to stock area??... Confused...

I try to get some pic on here, I finally figured out how to do it.
On the dogbones you would think they would need to be longer, but when took off the dogbone and tipped the motor till the cv shafts lined it turned out that the dogbone had to be shorter. We're not using the stock 95 beretta dogbone location thats on the top driver's side, we used to older beretta I think 93 and older where the dogbone is on the lower pass side. If we where using the 95 dogbone it would be longer.

I think you got the mount location swapped the 95 is lower passenger. 93 must be top drivers side. But I understand a little now that it's a different mount you're talking about.

The 2.2 should bolt up but it's the Isuzu and not sure how long it will last with a lot of power behind it. You'll have to get opinions from others on here....

Alot of people run the izuzu with the 2.8's and 3.1's and they hold up for the most part, unless your really tough on trannies.. But it wont hold very long with a newer 3X00.

you can run the izuzu until you find a getrag there is two of them in pick n pull here in san antonio, one in a late 80's 2.8l beretta and think the other is in 3.1l grand am

As far as I know, ALL v6 berettas came with the 282. Only the 2.2 and the 2.0 came with the izuzu trannys.

I do know that the caviliers came with v6's with the izuzu and the getrag.

thats what i was saying he could use his izuzu trans until he finds a getrag 282. if he doesn't drive balls to the walls the izuzu will hold up and then when he finds getrag 282 he could put that in. and there is 2 getrag 282 at a junk yard by me.
