  • 284 to 282 swap into a gp.

just wondering about something. is it easy to swap a 282 into a w-body that had a 284 in it?

will the mount fit? NBD if it doesn't, i can make it fit

would the 4t60e axles plug into a 282?

will i have to swap out the shifter and linkage?

will i have to swap out the slave cylinder? master cylinder?

    will the vss work correctly?

    would j-body or n-body axles work on a w-body?

reason i was asking is my 284 will die at some point and replacing it will most likely be either difficult or expensive and i am not going back to auto.

lastly, when that fated day comes, i would like to see how my 3.4 dohc would act with one of those 282's with the 3.94 fdr's provided the bellhousing is the same from a quad4 to a 60v6 of course.

Q4 will not bolt up, you'll need to swap internals. I think axles from any 282 will fit, but you'll need to measure then for the proper length. You should be able to swap the slave/master... not 100% on that. VSS is another "should" work. I don't think a sleezy E axle setup will swap in, I think the teeth count are different. It should mount to the engine the same, but to the frame rail/subframe it might need to be modified. The linkage iirc is the same and I think the wobble bodies cable lengths are longer than the L, N, J etc etc cables... so if they snap, you'll need to use 284 cables again.

that is what i was thinking on the q4 bellhousing. can the q4 282 gearset be put into a v6 282?

internals? as in cluth/pressure plate i take it? that's a given. flywheels will swap granted the 282 tranny is from 88+

that's good to hear that the 284 cables and shifter do not have to be switched...less work

slave master will swap, more goos news

trans mount, nothing a steel plate with 4 holes in it cannot cure.

only thing left is a big ??? for the axles then.

The guts from the Q4 can be installed to the V6 trans. You should be able to retain your flywheel and use the clutch disk for the trans application (internal/external) .

In this case you'd just swap the V6 bellhousing onto the Q4 tranny, i've done it twice now, it's pretty easy.

sweet even better . i think a 3.4 dohc would scream with that gearset.

any1 know anything about the axles? whether the other axles will work in my w-body or whether the 284 axles will fit onto the 282?

I have HEARD (but have not confirmed) that the INTERMEDIATE SHAFT is different between the 282, and the 284. Something about them is different (not sure what).

I have also heard that a 282 shaft will not bolt onto the twin cam, but I don't understand that one either.

Just to be safe, you will want to get a W-body intermediate shaft with the 282 and use it.

intermediate shaft? you meant that splined piece that goes from the tranny into the clutch/pressure plate.

i wouldn't think it would be different. i know there are quite a few fiero's with tdc's in them.

i'll check up on that to be sure though.

a 1990 q4 trans has the same 4th and 5th as the 92-94 3.94 but a lower second(which isnt bad for a wbody). as for axles im not sure..
