  • 1996 Grand AM GT auto to 5 speed parts

As my first mod id like to swap in a 5-speed to replace my crappy auto. I plan on going junk yard hopping for the parts. but dont know all the parts that i need, let alone witch trans i should look for.

I was looking at the Wiring manual and thought that trans is my best bet but im not to sure on the wiring. so im hoping some one that has done this before could help me out and let me know any differences also.

You might want to hold off on that idea. I'm trying to find out if I can put a 5 speed in my '96 Beretta and its not looking too good computer wise. So far from what I've researched the computer is going to be a big issue unless you go aftermarket or revert to OBD 1

Powertuner should let you disable stuff I would imagine that would give you problems, such as torq management or codes for when it detects the transmission sensors aren't there... And probably tune out the stuff for when it tries to adjust idle/etc for the auto

I know it's been done before several times on a 94/95 3100 ODBI berettas, and it runs but they have some surging of idle when coming at a stop sometimes. I'd guess with ODBII and a powertuner you could edit that out but also you'd have the ODBII codes for slipping trans/etc but I'm sure you could disable those DTC too....

EDIT: doesnt rickyline member on here have a 96 beretta with ODBII and a powertuner, and I think he has a manual swapped in too.. Might want to check with him...

ok sounds good so far. one question tho... when i go looking for the downer
should i also take the axles? I asked a friend about the subject and he pointed out that i might have to take the axles too, along with some other parts that i dont remember at the moment.

when i converted my 93 grand am to a 5 speed, i took, the flywheel, the transmission (getrag 282), i took the axles, and the tranny mounts and the wiring for the sensors on the tranny. hydraulic clutch assembly, pedals ,shifter, cables, pretty much everything.
