    My first car...

...was a 1970 Ford Maverick. 4 wheel drum brakes and no power brake booster, of course. I learned the meaning of careful driving and planning ahead. I also learned that your foot is a better anti-lock than a computer.

Dont think you can brake harder without ABS if you are skilled. ABS will drasticly improve braking performance. But I would only apply this statement to 4 wheel independant ABS. This is for one simple reason. Forces on tires and road surface can drasticly change during situations of braking (emergency or performance situations) only an ABS system can make each individual wheel brake with 100% of its avalible traction. And when you want to turn while braking and the inside tires unload the ABS can put more brake force on the outside tires and remove braking on the inside tires. On a conventional system you would have to remove pedle pressure so the tire with the least traction will not lock.

When F1 experimented with ABS they destroyed existing lap times. They could go into a corner and just hammer the brakes and make a hard turn and never go into lockup. Even if they were going too fast to hold their racing line they would still get through the corner. But because it was an aid and racing is about the driver it was removed and I can understand that. But the technology trickles down and now we are seeing advanced ABS in cars on the road. It works but like the article says people just have to lose thier old habbits if they wre used to standard brakes.
